Visibility score

An AI visibility score compresses mentions, position, and citations into one number. Useful for a dashboard, but it cannot be audited on its own.

A visibility score compresses several signals - mentions, position in the answer, and citations - into a single number. It is convenient for a dashboard and for tracking direction at a glance.

The problem is that a score hides its inputs. When it moves, you cannot tell whether the brand was dropped from one answer, whether a competitor displaced it, or whether a citation disappeared. Without the underlying answer text, the number cannot be verified or acted on.

The practical compromise is to keep both. Use a score as a summary, but store the verbatim answer and the cited pages behind it so any change can be traced. A score you can audit is useful; a score you cannot is decoration.
