How to rank in ChatGPT for B2B SaaS

How to rank in ChatGPT: the buyer prompts to track, the sources ChatGPT actually cites, and the steps that move a B2B SaaS brand into the answer.

“Ranking in ChatGPT” is a loose phrase for a specific outcome: when a buyer asks a category question, ChatGPT names your product in the answer. There is no index to climb. There is an answer to be included in.

Start with the prompts that create a shortlist

You cannot rank for every question, and you do not need to. Track the handful that decide a shortlist:

  • Category questions (“best [category] software for [ICP]”).
  • Comparisons (“[competitor] vs [your product]”, “[your product] alternatives”).
  • Pricing questions (“how much does [category] cost”).
  • Use-case questions tied to a segment or industry.

These are the prompts where a mention changes the buyer’s set of options.

Understand what ChatGPT is reading

ChatGPT’s answer is assembled from sources it has been trained on and, for some queries, retrieved live. In practice, the pages that move a B2B SaaS answer are rarely the vendor’s own homepage. They are listicles, review sites, comparison posts, documentation, and community threads. Your own page matters mainly when the engine already routes through it for a specific claim.

That is why the useful diagnostic is not “where do we rank” but “which pages did the answer cite instead.” Those pages are the levers.

The steps that actually move the answer

  1. Save the prompts and run them on a schedule, so you have a baseline.
  2. Record the verbatim answer, your position, the competitors named, and the cited URLs.
  3. Improve or earn the cited source: fix the comparison page, get into the listicle, answer the thread.
  4. Rerun the same prompt and compare. If the answer moved, you found a lever; if not, try the next cited page.

Do not stop at ChatGPT

The same question produces different answers on Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and the rest. A brand can be named by ChatGPT and absent from Gemini. Tracking one engine gives you one slice of the buyer’s research.

Sonarvue runs each prompt across all eight default engines and keeps the answer and citations for each. See how to track your brand in ChatGPT, the AEO and GEO guide, and AI search monitoring. Start with the free AI visibility check.
