AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what actually differs
AEO, SEO, and GEO compared: what each measures, where they overlap, and why answer engines change the unit from a ranking to a generated answer.
The three acronyms get used interchangeably, which is why so many teams buy the wrong tool. They are not the same job, even though they draw on the same work.
The one-line definitions
- SEO is whether a page can be found and ranked in a search engine.
- AEO (answer-engine optimization) is whether a brand is named in the answer an engine generates.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) is the broader work of improving how a generative engine represents, recommends, and cites a brand.
If that is all you need, stop here. If you are deciding what to measure, the rest matters.
Where they overlap
All three depend on the same inputs: crawlable, well-structured pages, credible third-party sources, and clear language a model can quote. You do not choose between them; you do them together. SEO governs whether you can be surfaced at all. AEO and GEO govern whether you are named once the sources are assembled.
The difference is the unit of measurement. SEO counts positions in a list. AEO and GEO count generated answers. That single change breaks most of the tooling built for the old model.
Why the unit changes everything
A ranking is stable and inspectable: a specific URL at a specific position. An answer is generative and per-prompt. The same buyer question can produce different shortlists on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity in the same afternoon. A composite “visibility score” hides that variance, which is convenient for a dashboard and useless for a decision.
The auditable unit is one prompt on one engine: was the brand named, who was named instead, which pages were cited, and did it change since the last run. That is the measurement that survives a client review.
What to do about it
Pick the prompts that create a shortlist, run them across the engines your buyers use, and keep the verbatim answer and its citations. Fix the source the engine actually leaned on, then rerun the prompt to prove the change.
