How to monitor AI search results
A practical way to monitor AI search results: fix a prompt set, run it across engines, store verbatim answers and citations, and alert on movement.
Monitoring AI search results is not complicated, but it is easy to do badly. The difference between a useful monitor and a vanity dashboard is whether you keep the underlying answers.
1. Fix the prompt set
Choose the buyer questions that create a shortlist and freeze them for the reporting period. A moving prompt set makes every trend uncomparable. Ten deliberate prompts across category, comparison, alternatives, and pricing is a solid start.
2. Run across engines, not one
Answers differ across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and the rest. If you monitor only one engine you will miss the competitor that owns a different one in your category. Run the same prompt across the engines your buyers actually use.
3. Store the verbatim answer and the citations
A score is a summary; the answer is the evidence. Save the exact text, whether your brand was named, who was named instead, and the source URLs the engine used. Citations are the lever you can act on.
4. Set alerts that matter
Alert on lost mentions, a competitor displacing you, and new sources entering the answer. Those three events are the ones that lead to work. A small change in a composite score usually is not.
5. Rerun on a schedule and report the movement
Weekly is enough to write into a report; daily is useful when you are actively fixing a gap. Report movement per prompt and per engine, then show the citations you improved and whether the answer followed.
Sonarvue does all of this across eight engines, keeps the answer and citations, and includes all eight on every paid plan. See AI search monitoring, how to track your brand in ChatGPT, and the AEO and GEO guide.
