Read an AI answer like an analyst

A generated answer contains four signals worth recording: mention, position, competitor named, and citations. Learn to read them in under a minute.

A visibility score summarizes an answer; the answer itself is the evidence. Reading it properly takes a minute once you know the four signals.

First, mention: was your brand named at all? Second, position: was it first, in a list, or an afterthought? Third, the competitor named instead: that is your actual benchmark, not the whole category. Fourth, the citations: the pages the engine leaned on.

The citations are the most actionable and the most ignored. A score can rise while the citation list changes completely, and it is the citation list that tells you what to fix next.

Do this

  1. Read the answer and highlight every brand named.
  2. Note where yours appears, or note that it is absent.
  3. List the competitors named and their order.
  4. Copy the cited URLs; rank them by how often they appear.
