Answer engine
An answer engine returns a generated answer to a buyer's question instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot are examples.
An answer engine is a search-style product that responds to a question with a synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Grok, and Kimi all behave this way for research-style questions.
The practical difference is where the result lives. A search engine hands the buyer ten options and lets them choose; an answer engine makes the shortlist for them, naming two or three products and moving on. If your brand is not in that shortlist, there is nothing to click and nothing in your analytics to warn you.
Because answers are generated per prompt and per engine, the same buyer question can produce different shortlists on different engines. That is why monitoring one answer engine is a partial view, and why the unit of measurement in AEO is the answer, not the ranking.
