Turn a competitor mention into a fix
A competitor winning an answer is a lead, not bad news. Here is a small workflow for converting a competitor mention into the next piece of work.
When a competitor is named and you are not, the useful question is not 'why are they better' but 'what page did the engine read'. That page is the gap, and it is usually concrete.
Start with the citation list for the losing prompt. If a competitor's own comparison page is cited, your version of that comparison may be missing or too generic. If a third-party listicle is cited, your job is inclusion.
Log the gap as a task with the prompt, the competitor, and the cited source attached. Then rerun the prompt after the work ships. This is the same loop as SEO, with a sharper success signal: the answer either changed or it did not.
Do this
- Pick one prompt a competitor owns.
- Read its citations and find the deciding source.
- Write the smallest fix that addresses that source.
- Rerun the prompt and record the result.
